Refractive Services

What is Refractive Services?

Refractive services encompass a range of procedures and treatments aimed at correcting refractive errors in the eye, such as nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), astigmatism, and presbyopia. These services aim to improve visual acuity and reduce the need for corrective lenses, such as glasses or contact lenses. Refractive services may include both surgical and non-surgical options, tailored to meet the individual needs and preferences of patients. Here are some common refractive services:

  1. Glasses and Contact Lens Prescriptions: Optometrists and ophthalmologists provide comprehensive eye examinations to assess refractive errors and prescribe corrective lenses, including glasses and contact lenses, to improve vision.

  2. LASIK (Laser-Assisted in Situ Keratomileusis): LASIK is a popular surgical procedure used to correct refractive errors by reshaping the cornea using a laser. LASIK can effectively treat myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism, allowing patients to achieve clearer vision without the need for glasses or contact lenses.

  3. PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy): PRK is another type of laser eye surgery that reshapes the cornea to correct refractive errors. Unlike LASIK, PRK involves removing the outer layer of the cornea (epithelium) before laser treatment. PRK may be recommended for patients with thin corneas or other corneal issues.

  4. SMILE (Small Incision Lenticule Extraction): SMILE is a minimally invasive laser eye surgery that corrects myopia by creating a small incision in the cornea to remove a tiny, disc-shaped piece of tissue. SMILE offers the advantage of faster recovery and reduced risk of dry eye compared to traditional LASIK.

  5. Implantable Contact Lenses (ICL): ICLs are surgically implanted lenses placed inside the eye to correct refractive errors. ICL surgery is typically recommended for patients with high levels of myopia or hyperopia who may not be suitable candidates for LASIK or PRK.

  6. Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE): RLE, also known as lens replacement surgery, involves removing the eye’s natural lens and replacing it with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL) to correct refractive errors. RLE is often recommended for patients with presbyopia or high levels of hyperopia who are not candidates for other refractive procedures.

  7. Orthokeratology (Ortho-K): Ortho-K is a non-surgical, reversible method of reshaping the cornea using specially designed rigid gas permeable contact lenses. Patients wear the lenses overnight to temporarily correct refractive errors and enjoy clear vision during the day without the need for glasses or contacts.

  8. Conductive Keratoplasty (CK): CK is a non-laser refractive procedure that uses radiofrequency energy to reshape the cornea and correct mild to moderate hyperopia (farsightedness). CK is typically performed in patients over the age of 40 who are seeking near vision correction.

These are just a few examples of refractive services available to patients seeking to improve their vision and reduce their dependence on glasses or contact lenses. It’s essential for individuals interested in refractive treatments to undergo a comprehensive eye evaluation and consultation with an eye care professional to determine the most suitable treatment option based on their unique needs, eye health, and lifestyle factors.
